Stanley Wayne Bowman
October 19, 1936 – November 12, 2010

SAVANNAH – Beloved husband and father, Stanley Wayne Bowman, age 74, was peacefully called home to God on November 12. His wife Betty Jo BJ and son Craig were by his side at the time of his passing at St. Joseph's Candler.

Stan was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1936 to the delight of his parents, Edna and Paul, and his siblings. As an adult, Stan served in the Unites States Army Signal Corp in Korea, as well as in the Unites States Army Security Agency. After the military, Stan's most notable career achievement was that of News Director and Anchor at WSAV-TV and WJCL-TV in the 70s and 80s.

Stan and his wife were also among those who formally registered the Savannah Swim Team as a non-profit in the 80s, after which the team set numerous records, including Georgia's first individual age group national swim record, courtesy of their son Craig.

A child of God, Stan was an active member in all the churches he attended throughout his life, proudly serving as deacon at Boca Glades Baptist Church in Boca Raton, Florida and as a beloved choir member at Southside Baptist Church in Savannah.

Yet of all the facts that can be shared about Stan's life, the most important is that he was a truly remarkable man. Funny. Caring. Selfless. His smile could brighten the darkest of black holes, and his love was just as unending. While we will mourn his passing, we will forever cherish the love he gave so selflessly and the joy he brought to our lives.

He is survived by his bride of forty-nine years, Betty Jo; his son and daughter-in-law, Stanley Craig Bowman and Jacqui Garcia-Bowman; his brothers Jerry and Lee; and sisters Sue and Paula.

The family will receive friends at Southside Baptist Church, 5502 Skidaway Road in Savannah, on Tuesday, November 16 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Stan's name to the American Cancer Society.

Stanley Wayne Bowman was a four-time cancer survivor. We wish with all our hearts it could have been five.
